Book Review :: A Beautiful Mess Photo Idea Book

Unless you’ve been blogging under a rock, you can’t fail to have fallen in love with ‘A Beautiful Mess’, the hugely successful American lifestyle blog ran by uber talented sisters Elsie Larson and Emma Chapman. With their unique style, practical DIYs and flawless photography, you’d be hard-pressed not to find something you like. So, when I heard they were releasing a photo idea book, I wanted to find out for myself exactly just how they capture those inspiring shots. Luckily, Santa knew just that and on Christmas Day this beautiful book was waiting for me.

Boasting 95 photo ideas, the book certainly doesn’t disappoint. A visual feast for the eyes. Ever wondered how to photograph your pet, create interesting backdrops or use beautiful lighting? Accompanying each idea are practical, easy-to-master tips to help you create beautiful and personal photographs to be proud of.

Featuring many recognizable shots, it would be easy to disregard the book and simply browse ABM. However, I would describe it as an ultimate archive of their best work. With added photography to explain each tip, the familiar photography can only enhance each idea. As if 95 photo ideas wasn’t enough, the book also offers numerous creative DIY tutorials for making the most of your photographs. Some that have been featured on ABM, but many that haven’t.

If ever you needed convincing to take out your digital, analog or camera phone, this book will inspire you to capture the detail in life. I’m no stranger to Instagram, but since discovering this book I’ve found myself taking more and more photographs. I’ve been inspired to try and capture the detail in life, try new angles and find new backdrops.

Put simply. It’s beautiful, it’s inspiring, it’s worth buying.
